RDC welcomes Shima Elshaikh as Graduate Town Planner

03 November 2025

With an undergraduate degree in Architecture, Shima first developed an interest in creating places that are liveable, inclusive, and sustainable — and in how thoughtful design can improve people’s quality of life. That foundation sparked a passion for town planning as a profession that combines creativity, social understanding, and strategic problem-solving.

“I was drawn to planning because it brings together design, social insight, and strategy — all directed toward improving people’s quality of life,” Shima said. “I’m particularly passionate about creating equitable and inclusive communities that reflect diverse needs and voices.”

Shima was attracted to RDC for its small, close-knit team culture and hands-on approach to professional development. “At this stage of my career, I wanted to be part of a supportive team where I could take on varied responsibilities, contribute to real projects, and learn from experienced planners,” she explained.

In her role, Shima supports the planning team across a range of tasks — from reviewing planning applications and interpreting local and national policies, to preparing briefs and undertaking site visits.

Reflecting on her first few weeks, Shima shared:
“My first weeks at RDC have been both welcoming and engaging. I immediately felt part of a friendly and supportive team who were open to sharing their knowledge. The exposure to different projects has helped me build confidence and understand how planning decisions are approached in practice.”

Looking ahead, Shima is excited to continue developing her expertise and work towards becoming a Chartered Town Planner, with a focus on community-led and sustainable development.

Managing Director Robert Doughty commented:
“At RDC, we’re proud to give graduates the opportunity to make meaningful contributions from day one. Shima has shown great enthusiasm and curiosity — qualities that will serve her well in a career focused on shaping better places.”

We’re delighted to have Shima on board and look forward to seeing her growth and contributions in the months ahead.
