RDC - Robert Doughty - Town Planning and Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor and public spaces to achieve environmental, socio-behavioural, and/or aesthetic outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social, ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of interventions that will produce the desired outcome. The scope of the profession includes: urban design; site planning; town or urban planning; environmental restoration; parks and recreation planning; visual resource management; green infrastructure planning and provision; and private estate and residence landscape master planning and design; all at varying scales of design, planning and management.” (Wikipedia)
As landscape architects we identify and solve problems using design techniques based on a full understanding of the external environment, knowledge of the functional and aesthetic characteristics of landscape materials, and of the organisation of landscape elements, external spaces and activities. The Consultancy provides comprehensive and specific landscape layouts including long and short-term landscape management plans, detailed garden designs, tourism and amenity facilities and public park design. Projects undertaken have ranged from large scale seaside foreshore redevelopments, power stations and Ministry of Defence grounds maintenance specifications as well as market housing schemes and public, sensory and private gardens.
A key example of where Town Planning meets Landscape Architecture is the undertaking of Landscape Visual Impact Assessments both in respect of normal planning applications and for those of a scale and impact that require Environmental Statements. The Consultancy has a track record of carrying out assessments and co-ordinating the work required to deal with planning applications that are determined to be subject to the Environmental Impact Regulations.
